Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats.

In dairy livestock, it can cause severe health and economic consequences, including a significant reduction in milk production and the development of chronic mastitis, making animals less productive and drastically reducing their commercial value.

Infections can lead to complications such as abortions, infertility, chronic lameness and, in severe cases, systemic conditions such as chronic heart disease.

The rapid transmissibility of the virus makes constant and timely monitoring essential, also to avoid export bans and trade restrictions.
