Italy: farm gate milk price and retail milk price

The graph evidences the remarkable question about the difference of the two prices, mainly due to the new type of retailing.

Some considerations may be made:

The retail milk price is the result of the economic return gained by each "milk player" (farmers, processors, retailers):
  • The Italian milk farmers have steady improved the milk quality investing in:
    • selecting genetically the cattle,
    • feeding research and
    • managing properly the farm in order to grant the well being of the animals and an optimal hygiene sanitary environment;

  • The Processors (manufacture companies) duly check and preserve milk quality and are in charge of :
    • heat treatment and packaging,
    • the logistic delivery plan, widening their own presence on the national territory
    • the advertising and marketing of the products calling in from the market the products next to expiry ("resi")

  • The Giant Retailers in Italy, last player of the "milk chain" has progressively replaced the boutiques/shops with regard to milk distribution. They have aided the widespread all dairy products all over the Italian territory.
