World: WPC and SMP Prices

This page compares prices recorded for Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) in Germany, Oceania and the US with prices recorded for Whey Protein Concentrate Powder (WPC containing 34% dried protein) in the US (Central and West) over a given time period.

WPC (Whey Protein Concentrate) powder comes from concentration of the whey protein content via a membrane separation process (Ultrafiltration - UF).

We have highlighted the comparison between SMP and WPC because Whey Protein Concentrate Powder (WPC-34%) is frequently used in both the food (e.g. ice-cream) and livestock (e.g. calf feed) sector to partially replace skimmed milk powder (SMP).

Comparison of the respective prices can offer a key interpretation of the trends reported. We should also remember that price trends for Whey Protein Concentrate Powder (WPC) are influenced by the skimmed milk powder (SMP) market prices.

The largest WPC-producing countries in Europe are France, Germany and Holland.
