Farm-gate Raw Cow Milk Prices in Lombardy

As the leading Italian region in terms of cow milk production,
the farm-gate milk price in Lombardy serves as a reference for local milk prices throughout Italy and beyond.

On the one hand, the price is influenced by the value of milk in its dairy products, particularly cheese, while on the other, it is compared with milk prices in the main milk-producing countries in Europe.

This page reports the milk price in Lombardy as monitored by CLAL. It is an estimate intended to indicate the overall market trend, calculated by CLAL based on sector agreements and the most relevant market information (see methodological note). The price excludes VAT and quality premiums and refers to milk with 3.7% fat and 3.25% total protein content.

The page also includes comparisons with milk prices in other European countries, as well as with fertiliser costs, and a simulation of the average monthly quality premium for Lombardy, based on the Regional Table for Quality Milk Payment.

Methodological note: Milk prices in Italy are set by CLAL on the basis of regional, local, company agreements, and mainly of the market trend. Using the data available to us, we have shown how the stipulated prices have developed in the Lombardy Region over a five-year period. This choice is due to the consistency of the volumes of milk produced in the region and the indicativity of the fixed prices, often considered a bargaining reference point in other villages.

Next update: 15 September 2026 .

The decline in the Farmgate Milk price in Italy at the end of 2025 led to a Gentlemen’s Agreement which set, for the months of January, February, and March 2026, two monthly reference prices:

  • The first price, fixed, applies to production volumes corresponding to those of the same month of the previous year;
  • The second price, calculated as the monthly average of the weekly minimum Spot whole Milk prices quoted by the CCIAA (Chamber of Commerce of Milan, Monza, and Lodi), applies to any additional milk produced.

A second Agreement was reached on March 27, 2026, and set two monthly reference prices also for the months of April, May and June 2026, with the same method as the first Agreement.

A third Agreement was reached on June 24, 2026. A single price was set, for the period July to December 2026, for production volumes within the same quantities as the corresponding month of the previous year. Any excess production will be left to private negotiations between farmers and the industry. A fair correlation mechanism for Grana Padano is also planned, to be applied at the end of the year.

The Gentlemen’s Agreement, however, does not entail any legal obligations.
CLAL continues to collect data on the Farmgate Milk price in Lombardy using the usual methods and care; however, the temporary and exceptional market situation, which is complex and unprecedented, could affect the results of the survey.

Quality Premium

This section provides a simulation of the average monthly Quality Milk Premium paid in Lombardy. Milk quality is assessed using the average results of milk analyses carried out by IZSLER (Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna) in the region. These results are then compared with the regional table established under the interprofessional agreements for payment based on milk quality (PLQ).
